A new Raspberry Pi FireWire HAT is being used to build a portable “Memory Recording Unit” (MRU) that records DV video from older FireWire/i.Link MiniDV cameras to solid-state storage instead of tape, according to a Mar 27, 2026 blog post. The setup pairs a Raspberry Pi 5 with Computer Equipment Group’s prototype “Firehat” and a PiSugar 3 Plus 5000mAh battery, plus a 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable, tested with a Canon GL1. The author says the battery delivers roughly 2–4 hours, including over 3 hours recording to a 64GB microSD card. It can also archive MiniDV tapes using dvgrab and connect to other FireWire devices. The post notes Apple dropped FireWire support in macOS Tahoe, increasing demand for alternatives.
