Kakao’s labor union announced a four-hour strike and rally on June 10 in Pangyo, demanding job security and reforms to what it calls a “management-led” pay system that favors executives. The union wants the company to stop asset disposals and business splits and has floated allocating about 10% of operating profit to employee bonuses; it warned actions could escalate if negotiations stall but said it won’t aim to paralyze operations for now. Kakao rejected union demands including profit-sharing, saying they’re unrealistic and would hinder investment and competitiveness—especially against well-funded, AI-focused global rivals. The dispute follows failed government-led talks and contrasts with a recent Samsung labor deal tying bonuses to 10.5% of operating profit.
