Kindle to end store downloads and registering for 1st-5th gen kindles in May
Amazon told customers it will discontinue support for Kindle e-readers released in 2012 or earlier starting May 20, 2026, affecting models such as the Kindle (1st/2nd gen), DX/DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4/5, Kindle Touch, and the first-generation Paperwhite. Owners will still be able to read books already downloaded, but will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new titles on those devices after the cutoff. Amazon also warns that deregistered or factory-reset devices cannot be re-registered, effectively ending their usefulness. To “minimize disruption,” Amazon is offering a promotional code for 20% off selected newer Kindles plus an eBook credit. Customers criticized the move as planned obsolescence and environmentally wasteful.
