Krita 6.0 Released with Qt6 Port and Better Wayland Support
Krita released versions 5.3.0 and 6.0.0 simultaneously on March 24, 2026; the same source can build either release depending on whether it’s compiled with Qt5/KDE Frameworks (5.3.0) or Qt6 (6.0.0). The projects are functionally similar, though 6.0.0 adds more Wayland functionality and is the first Qt6-based release, currently labeled experimental, so the team recommends 5.3.0 for production work. Key additions include a rewritten text feature with on-canvas editing and OpenType support, vector panel tools for comics, an improved fill tool that can close gaps, faster liquify in transform, new filters (propagate colors, reset transparent), better HDR painting, real-time recorder docker, and improved PSD text object support. Downloads are available for Windows, Linux (AppImage), macOS, Android, and source archives.
The Krita project released Krita 5.3.0 and Krita 6.0.0 simultaneously on Tuesday, 24 March 2026. Both builds come from the same source code, with the resulting version depending on whether it is built against Qt 5 or Qt 6 and corresponding KDE Frameworks; 6.0.0 adds more Wayland functionality but is described as experimental as Krita’s first Qt 6-based release. The developers recommend 5.3.0 for production work, while expecting 6.0 to become the main version before year-end. New features include a redesigned text tool (on-canvas editing, full OpenType support, text flowing into shapes), improved fill and transform tools, new filters, better HDR painting, real-time recording, and improved PSD support for text objects. The project also ended 32-bit Windows builds.
